Walking down the aisles of the supermarket you are barraged by the number of different labels on products: Organic-this, Fair Trade-that… Food Alliance Certified… Natural and much more. They all sound good, but is that enough? What is actually behind all of the labels you see? What do they really mean – if anything?
These labels can be confusing – there are so many and it’s hard to know what rules and standards are behind some of them. Did you know, for example, that terms such as “cage-free” are not government or third-party certified labels? So in many cases, there isn’t any agency setting standards that all products with these terms must adhere to. There’s a lot to take in…so we’re aiming to break it down bit by bit – and then provide you a “cheat sheet” to keep track. (Don’t worry, there’s no pop quiz when we’re done – just good info at your fingertips!)
What to do? Well, we’ve started work on a guide which we’ll update as our research progresses to help you feel confident in your purchases and know that you are respecting human rights by the products you buy and use every day, so check back in the weeks to come!
